Where an island paradise meets the azure Indian Ocean,
Cape Weligama is a Sri Lankan lovers’ dream waiting to be discovered
Sri Lanka has been captivating us ever since Marco Polo set foot on its idyllic shores. This palm lined jewel, spread across 12 manicured acres, rests on its Southern shore, rising 40 meters above the Indian ocean. A stunning 60 meters infinity pool hugs the coastline, appearing to flow into the sea. Designed by celebrated architect Lek Bunnag, Cape Weligama resembles a traditional Sri Lankan village. With only 40 villas and suites, expect dedicated butler service and spa pampering in the comfort of your private villa. Fly into the resort via seaplane, drop your bags and drink in that breath taking panoramic view.

“Our company came upon the hotel business by accident! My father Merrill J. Fernando founded one of the world’s most successful tea brands with Dilmah Tea. Determined to benefit the local community and environment, he launched the MJF Charitable Foundation and other initiatives such as the Small Entrepreneur and Local Heroes Programmes. These initiatives provide financial assistance for education, health care and development in the community.
Tea and hospitality came together in a very natural way for us. Alongside my father and my brother, Dilshan, we began running unofficial tea tours, with visitors staying in our tea planters’ bungalows and estate managers’ homes, touring the factories and plantations with our team. Word spread and our accidental hotel business began!
We are proud that our hotel business has taken the lead in sustainability efforts. Cape Weligama offers you stunning views of the Indian Ocean. Behind the scenes, sustainability drives all our disciplines and the guest experience is built around the natural environment, whether it is the effective water treatment and recycling or designs for energy efficiency. We undertake responsible sourcing of produce used at the resort by engaging the local community, such as the fishermen, to encourage sustainable fishing and show them the benefits of avoiding destructive fishing.”
imagine a romantic day like this
Awake at your own pace, stroll out onto your private verandah and bathe in the early morning sun. Refresh yourself with a dip in the pool, then order a delicious breakfast of fruits and pastries as your loved one sleeps. Served by your villa butler on the patio, ease your way into the day together.
The only thing on the morning’s agenda is a bicycle tour through the rice paddies. Your knowledgeable guide points out ancient temples and their significance and takes you to hidden lagoons. Sample the local cuisine with a lunchtime stop at the village.
It’s afternoon and you both decide to cool off in the glistening, Indian ocean. Stroll down to a footfall free beach, wade out into its turquoise shores and admire the view. An aromatic massage for two later awaits you at the villa. Invigorate with a natural Sri Lankan scrub, refresh in your own private steam room and experience a blissful essential oil massage for two. End the day in the most perfect way, with a romantic dinner set up for two under the sparkling stars.
Paying reverence to Sri Lankan tradition, the 23 private villas are set within eight stone ringed gardens, each home to two to three villas and 15 meters swimming pool. The suites are set in groups of four and can interconnect. They are tastefully designed using warm woods, natural stone and subtle lighting with elements of plantation style throughout. Each private villa enclave is named after a famous explorer or writer who was touched by Sri Lanka’s magic such as Robert Knox, Joris Van Spilbergen and of course Marco Polo himself.
